Slutresultat individuellt: 1) Zara Phillips, Storbrutannien, Toy Town 46,70 felpoäng 2) Frederick Clayton, Australien, Ben Along Time 48,80 3) Amy Tryon, USA, Poggio 50,70 4) Frank Ostholt, Tyskland, Air Jordan 50,90 5) Heinrich Romeike, Tyskland, Marius Voigt-Logistik 52,40 6) Bettina Hoy, Tyskland Ringwood Cockatoo 52,70 8) Magnus Gällerdal, Sverige, Keymaster 53,80 14) Dag Albert, Sverige, Whos Blitz 67,50 35) Linda Algotsson, Sverige, My Fair Lady 96,90 43) Viktoria Carlerbäck, Sverige, Ballys Geronimo 129,60

Slutresultat lag: 1) Tyskland 156,00 2) Storbritannien  180,00 3)Australien 197,30 4) USA 198,10 5) Sverige 218,20 6) Nya Zeeland 221,70

Söndag, från FEI:  After a tremendously exciting Jumping round in the great Aachen arena, Zara Phillips and Toy Town are the 2006 World Eventing Champions (46.70). Australia’s Clayton Fredericks aboard Ben Along Time takes the silver (48.80) and Amy Tryon and Poggio are in bronze (50.70).

With all the winners within a fence, one may say that it was a tight finish indeed. The result was not known until the very last rider – Zara Phillips who was in the lead after Dressage and Cross Country – had jumped the last obstacle. The pair had a pole down in the C element of the penultimate triple combination and collected a time penalty, but victory was at hand. And as soon as Toy Town was out of the course, the stadium exploded into loud cheers with German flags and Union Jacks adding to the colourful atmosphere.

“It was amazing to jump in that arena,” Zara said. “There is nothing in Eventing that comes anywhere near it.” One could have imaged then that an Eventing horse like Toy Town would have been tense and impressed but that was not the case at all. The true showman that he is just loves crowds and even believes that they have come all the way to watch him. So the Aachen atmosphere lifted him up and contributed to the pair’s great success.

In a gesture of true friendship, Zara Phillips dedicated her medal to Irish rider Sherelle Duke who suffered a fatal accident at a one day national event exactly a week ago. “I lost a friend and what I did these days I did for her,” Zara declared. All the members of the British team wore on their coats red and white ribbons – the colours of Sherelle Duke – in memory of her.

The other hero of the day, Clayton Fredericks, was also understandably pleased with his 11-year old gelding Ben Along Time. Clayton, who won the 2005 FEI Eventing World Cup Final one year ago, knew to remain focused on the job at hand and keep a cool hand. “That’s what Eventing is all about. Perform as well as possible in every sport and keep the concentration until the end.”

Bronze medallist Amy Tryon saw her win as a huge surprise. She was also a member of the US team and had considered her job to be a good pathfinder for the team. The paid her horse Poggio the tribute he deserves. “I’m just so lucky to be able to ride him,” she commented, “Poggio and I have known each other for many years now and I’ve found that he has a unique way of doing things and to win, I have to let him be.” Poggio was not initially thought of as a medal winner. He was discovered nine years ago through a classified ad in the Seattle Times. Poggio or Pogi as he is affectionately nicknamed was an ex-racehorse who also worked as a mountain pack horse. He and Amy were members of the gold winning US team at the 2002 FEI World Equestrian Games in Jerez. Now they are again on the podium. What a career!

To the sounds of deafening applause, team Germany were crowned team World Champions (156), followed by Great Britain (180) in silver and Australia (197,30) in bronze. Team USA are in fourth position only 0,80 penalty points behind Australia. Bettina Hoy, who had begun the competition with impressive Dressage and a clear Cross country, had two Jumping poles and a time penalty today, warmly congratulated Zara on her win. She also paid tribute to Japanese rider Yoshiaki Oiwa, who just like Zara, Team bronze medallist and husband Andrew Hoy and herself, is based at Gatcombe. Yoshi finishes in 18th position on his Dressage score of 74.50. A remarkable achievement indeed! Team silver medallist winner William Fox-Pitt also congratulated the World Champion, saying that it was almost discouraging to see her record after only after two years on the British team.

The 2006 Word Eventing Championship closes in a memorable spirit of camaraderie and fair play. It is everyone’s wish that this discipline becomes now part of the Aachen tradition.

Individuellla ekipaget Tobias Grönberg - Amaretto ligger 41:a på 117,70.

Hon ligger 32:a på 86,90.

Ställning efter dressyr och terräng, individuellt: 1) Zara Phillips, Storbritannien, Toy Town 41,70 felpoäng 2) Bettina Hoy, Tyskland, Ringwood Cockatoo 43,70 3) Frank Ostholt, Tyskland, Air Jordan 46,90 4) Clayton Fredericks, Australien, Ben Along Time 48,80 5) Heelan Tompkins, Nya Zeeland, Glengarrick 49,80 6) Magnus Gällerdal, Sverige, 49,80 12) Dag Albert, Sverige, Whos Blitz 61,50 32) Linda Algotsson, Sverige, My Fair Lady 86,90 41) Tobias Grönberg, Sverige, Anmaretto 117,70 49) Viktoria Carlerbäck, Sverige, Ballys Geronimo 125,60
Johan Lundin, Sverige, Major Tom ute

Ställning efter dressyr och terräng, lag: 1) Tyskland 143 straffpoäng 2) Storbritannien 175 3) USA 190,10 4) Australien 193,30 5) Sverige 198,20 6) Nya Zeeland 207,70

Lördag, ryttarkommentarer:

Hinrich Romeike (GER)

It is a very demanding course, which requires an immense amount of strength, because you are constantly riding uphill and downhill. So it is very important that you have a horse that is easy to handle.

The cross-country track is absolutely fitting for the World Championships. It is one of the best courses that I have seen over the past few years.

In fact it was good that I had to stop en route, because it enabled me to catch my breath again.

It was a wonderful feeling being cheered on by thousands of applauding fans as I rode by.

Dirk Schrade (GER)

Sindy had lost a horseshoe on her foreleft leg, which meant I wasn't able to ride as fast. Furthermore, the ground was so wet and muddy that the mare really skidded a few times without the horseshoe.

Ingrid Klimke (GER)

We were both in top form this morning. At first Sleep Late was fresh and eager to jump. I found the ideal approach for the Soers Canyon, but at the last moment my horse pulled his head to the side and ran past. However, I still had a good feeling until we started cantering uphill and he started breathing very hard, which is very untypical for him. After that I rode more cautiously and took the alternative route at the last water complex.

Of course I am very disappointed, but one also has to accept defeats, it is just part of the sport. And I am also a little concerned about Sleep Late.

Heelan Tompkins (AUS)

I am overjoyed, but also totally surprised. The course is completely different to what I had expected. It is incredibly difficult and has lots and lots of corners.

The hoards of spectators…wow, it is really crazy here!!!

Frank Ostholt (GER)

At the beginning Air Jordan pulled against the bit somewhat, he was very fresh and eager to jump. He took the difficult water complex very well. Overall it is a very demanding course, which encompasses everything you can expect of a Championship course.

Whether he has a tip for the remaining German riders? No, we have ridden according to plan so far, and we should continue to follow this strategy.

Heidi White (USA)

The course is very difficult. You are constantly confronted with new challenges. The obstacles demand everything possible from you. When I set off the ground was still moist and soft, which didn't make things easier.

My horse was confused at first. We are not used to so many people shouting so close to the course.

But overall I really must say: I am thrilled. It was a phenomenal round!

Andreas Dibrowski (GER)

I am very very disappointed because my horse ran past obstacle 25b, I came over 25a and she didn't quite find the right way to the next obstacle. In a split second all my hopes of winning a medal disappeared.

Sharon Hunt (GBR)

I am totally delighted, my horse was fantastic. I was chasing the time a bit and had a sticky moment at obstacle 19, when he took off too early and landed on the jump. But he is ever so clever and helped himself out of the situation.

Karen O'Connor (USA)

It is an extraordinarily technical course, but then I have an extraordinarily good horse. It is the first time ever that he has had two refusals. He lost a bit of confidence as a result of the technical difficulties. I will have to work on this over the winter and gradually build him up for Hong Kong.

Zara Phillips (GBR)

It was super!!! Toy Town did a fantastic job. The course was fabulous to ride, even if it did include some very tricky combinations, bends and edges. I am very happy that I reached the finishing line in such a good time. I can hardly believe that I am currently in the lead. And I am really looking forward to the jumping competition in the big stadium tomorrow.

I have had Toy Town for nine years now, he came to me as a five-year-old and I trained him myself. It was pure chance that he came into my hands. My father read an advert in the "Horse and Hounds" and went to look at the horse. It is amazing how quickly he has advanced to reach three-star level.

Bettina Hoy (GER)

I am thoroughly satisfied. He jumped everything well. The German team riders were given the instruction to reach the finish with as few faults as possible, which is why I took two alternative routes towards the end of the course, in order to avoid taking any risks, because I noticed that he was a little bit tired.

Magnus Gällerdal (SWE)

It was a nice round. The course has a very good rhythm and was ideal for my horse, which is not the fastest one. So I could canter rhythmically and I only had a scary feeling at one fence. At the last water fence I took the alternative way. I loved the crowd along the course. Keymaster and I could easily start again.

Carlos Grave (POR)

The Portugese rider unfortunately had a fall, but remounted and managed to finish the course with his horse Laughton Hills without sustaining any injuries.

Oliver Townend (GBR)

It was a fantastic competition. The course was very tough with several difficult demands, but a real WEG course. The crowd was bigger and louder than I have ever experienced. At the last water fence I was a little bit insecure, because one of my fellow-countrymen was previously eliminated at this fence. I´m only disappointed about my dressage, because Flint Curtis is normally a very good dressage horse.

---The British rider is only 23 years old. His horse Flint Curtis is 10 years old and it is only the second four star event he has ever competed in.

Andrew Hoy (AUS)

I am delighted about my wife's ride. Bettina rode like a World Champion, simply fantastic.

The course was very demanding, as I had already noticed during the course inspection. But one must say, Rüdiger Schwarz did a brilliant job. I tackled the course with the necessary respect. Unfortunately my horse was so strong and temperamental, that it wasn't easy for me. And this was the reason for my refusal at the C element of the Normandy Bank.

Lördag, från FEI:  The Cross Country of the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games held all its promises: it was fabulous, exciting, difficult, technical, tricky, all at once. It certainly was a selective one testing every quality of the horse, from freshness and honesty to fitness and stamina.

At the end of a fantastic clear round, Zara Phillips (GRB) and Toy Town are in the lead on their Dressage score of 41.70. Germany’s Bettina Hoy and Ringwood Cockatoo are close seconds exactly 2 points behind (43.70). Fellow German team member Frank Ostholt aboard Air Jordan 2 is in third position on 46.90.

“My horse did a fantastic job,” a delighted Zara Phillips declared. “Of course, there were a few hairy moments, and I could have jumped the first water better but I am very pleased. I went for the straight routes everywhere, it was the simple thing to do. The course was fabulous to ride and Rüdiger Schwartz deserves a lot of praise.”

Runner up Bettina Hoy was thoroughly happy with her horse. The pair came home clear with 7,20 penalties for exceeding the time allowed of 11:12. The German team had agreed on a strategy to finish with as few Jumping faults as possible. “I felt Cockatoo was getting a bit tired towards the end and I decided to take two alternative routes to secure a clear round for the German team.”

Zara Phillips and Bettina Hoy leave within a few kilometres of each other near Gatcombe Park and are good friends. “We don’t compete against each other, we compete against the course. Whoever wins tomorrow will be a worthy World Champion,” a glowing Bettina said.

Frank Ostholt was also understandably happy and pleased.

All three unanimously expressed how delighted and excited they were at the perspective to perform their Jumping test in the big stadium. Every rider dreams of the opportunity to compete in the famous Aachen arena. Eventers have never had the chance to experience that thrill so tomorrow will be a very special day for all of them.

The course was a challenge even for the best ones. Andrew Hoy (AUS), the most experienced World Championship rider at Aachen who had competed in 1978 in Lexington and in 1982 in Luhmuhlen, had a refusal. Ever the gentleman, he declared “I’m delighted about my wife’s ride. Bettina rode like a World Champion, simply fantastic.”

With 143,00 penalties, team Germany is in the lead, followed by Great Britain (175,00) and the USA (190,10). The drop score of the German team is Ingrid Klimke on Sleep Late (96,70) who had two unusual refusals. The pair had been in top form in the morning and the first strides on the course were confident as the horse was fresh and eager to jump. But when the uphill cantering sections began, Sleep Late grew tired and started breathing hard. By the end of the second water complex, the energy level had gone really low. British team members also had a hard time, William Fox-Pitt suffering one and Mary King two refusals.

There are the champions and there are those who ride at a World Championship for the first time. One of these newcomers is Viachaslav Poita from Belarus. Three years ago there were no international events in that country and fences of today’s level and difficulty were unheard of. With the help of the FEI Development programmes and the great personal involvement and motivation of FEI Development Officer Andrew Griffiths, the situation has improved spectacularly. Viachaslav achieved qualification at home and got across country today. Yes, he had three refusals and no, he was not the fastest (time 15:06), but this is a remarkable achievement notwithstanding. If the same hard work, motivation and well planned preparation continue, who knows where he will be in another three years.

Lördag, från arrangörerna: Will the Germans succeed in giving their sporting response to Aachen? Or is Bettina Hoy going to narrowly miss taking the World Championships title after the disappointment at the Olympic Games? The decision has been postponed until Sunday; after the dressage and cross-country, Hoy presently lies in an optimistic second place. Tickets are still available for the concluding show-jumping competition in Stadium 1.

After the spectacular cross-country ride at the Aachen Soers, the eventing competition is still open. Zara Phillips, the granddaughter of the British Queen Elisabeth, has taken the lead - when the riders enter the concluding show-jumping course in Stadium 1 tomorrow, the exciting duel will be: royalty vs. the would-be Olympic gold medallist. Tickets for the jumping tomorrow are available from the hotline on +49-(0)241-917-1111 and at the ticket offices on location.

Phillip's first comment after jumping out of the saddle was, "super ". She finished the course clear in the optimum time with her horse, Toy Town. "My horse did a wonderful job, I can hardly believe that I am in the lead." Now "I am just looking forward to the show-jumping in the big stadium tomorrow." Bettina Hoy was also very pleased with her result, although she didn't push her horse to the limit: "I avoided taking any risks towards the end of the course and I am thoroughly pleased with the current ranking."

The cross-country event located right next to the show grounds proved to be a spectacular and magnificent experience. 44,000 completely thrilled spectators followed the competition closely. So, the athletes were not only impressed by the German course designed by Rüdiger Schwartz, but also by the fantastic atmosphere. "A wonderful feeling," commented the German rider, Hinrich Romeike, who is currently in eighth place.

Fredag, från arrangörerna: The German team enter the cross-country competition of the Eventing World Championships with a good head start. After the dressage Bettina Hoy with the Irish gelding Ringwood Cockatoo, Frank Ostholt with the Hanoverian gelding Air Jordan, Ingrid Klimke with the English thoroughbred Sleep Late and Hinrich Romeike with the Holstein gelding Marius Voigt-Logistic have notched up a total score of only 122,5 (minus) points. Bettina Hoy achieved the best individual result with a score of 36.5. The Australian team rank second after the dressage (136.1). Andrew Hoy with Master Monarch an English thoroughbred, Megan Jones with her Irish thoroughbred Kirby Park Irish Jester, Sonja Johnson with the Australian gelding Ringwould Jaguar and Clayton Fredericks with his Irish thoroughbred Ben Along Time have a narrow lead over the British team, who are close behind them in third place (138.60).

"The atmosphere here is terrific. It is a wonderful experience riding into the stadium filled with thousands of German fans," stated the winner of the dressage Bettina Hoy. She also noted that the cross-country course is fantastic. "Rüdiger Schwarz is one of the best course designers in the world," commented the 43-year-old, who lives with her Australian husband in Gatcombe, Great Britain. Ingrid Klimke who came second in the dressage with Sleep Late (39.10) was also very satisfied and is looking forward to the cross-country. "Sleep Late is a fast horse, and I think this is a good course for him." Andreas Dibowski with his Hanoverian FRH Serve Well came joint third with the American rider Kimberley Severson on her thoroughbred Winsome Adante (49.9). Dibowski will be entering the cross-country course as an individual German rider. He was a little disappointed at not being able to ride for the team, but nevertheless showed understanding for the trainer's decision. "Now I can follow my own concept. It is difficult for me to estimate in what time the mare will be able to finish the course, because she is not one of the fastest."

The cross-country starts at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday. The 78 riders will then have to master a 6,380 m long course with 31 natural obstacles (45 fences in total).

Fredag, från FEI:  The Dressage phase of the Eventing competition was completed today. Bettina Hoy (GER) aboard Ringwood Cockatoo is in the lead with a remarkable 36.50. “It was amazing to see so many fans cheering with German flags all over. It was hard, but I remained focused on Dressage,” Bettina said. She, as a true supporter of her own nation, has died parts of her hair in the colours of the German flag and is very much part of the bright atmosphere.

She is followed by fellow German team-mate Ingrid Klimke on Sleep Late (39.10) and by overnight’s leader Andreas Dibowski on FRH Sleel Late (40.90) from …. Germany, who is tied in third position with Kimberly Severson (USA) on Winsome Adante, Initially, Dibowski had been disappointed not to be part of the German team, but that may now be proving an advantage taking some pressure off his shoulders.

In the team competition, Germany is in the lead (122,50), followed by Australia (136,10) and Great Britain (138,60). Despite winning three consecutive Olympic Games, Australia has never won a medal at a World Games, nor a world title. The door to success is still wide open and much will depend on the Cross Country course. It is unanimously described as a true championship challenge, where questions are being asked most of the way round. The 31 fences (45 jumping efforts) spreading over 6.380 m are beautifully built and presented. German Course Designer Ruediger Schwarz’s innovative design will test the best riders. It definitely is a tough course but it offers numerous alternatives and which ever solution is preferred, riding and concentration are required through to the very end.

78 riders from 24 countries will defend their chances on the Cross Country starting tomorrow at 9h30.

Tyske Andreas Dibowski - Serve Well leder på 40,90 före Megan Jones, Australien - Kirby Park Irish Jeter (44,10) och Donna Smith, Nya Zeeland - Call Me Clifton (45,40).
Lagryttare två, Dag Albert på Whos Blitz, hade 61,50 (24:a).
Individuella ryttaren Johan Lundin på Major Tom fick 66,70 straffpoäng, 31:a.

Hinrich Romeike: "Everyone will give his best"

"Difficult, but fair and rideable" - is how many of the eventers are describing the cross-country course at the FEI World Equestrian Games. After an initial inspection of the course, the German participants are also optimistically looking forward to the cross-country competition on Saturday (starting 10 a.m.). Hinrich Romeike (43), from Nübbel, North Germany, hit the nail on the head with his summary of the German strategy: "Everyone will give his best. Nobody will want to say afterwards, they perhaps could have done better." The course designed by the German course builder, Rüdiger Schwarz, which encompasses over 6,400 m and 31 natural obstacles, presents the riders with clearly recognisable tasks, according to Romeike. The National Coach, Hans Melzer, added: "This is a fair World Championship course and it is also one of the best I have ever seen."

Australia assumes the lead, Dibowski best rider of the day

Andreas Dibowski of the German team achieved the best result of the day in the dressage competition of the eventing. He was awarded 40.9 (minus) points with his 12-year-old Hanoverian mare, FRH Serve Well and is followed by the Australian rider Megan Jones with the 13-year-old gelding, Kriby Parker Irish Jester, (44.1). The rider from New Zealand, Donna Smith, currently ranks third with the 11-year-old thoroughbred gelding, Call Me Clifton (45.4).
After the first day of the eventing dressage, the Australian team assumed the lead (98.6) ahead of Germany (99.6), the USA (101.1), France (108.7), New Zealand (116.1) and Great Britain (116.2). However, this ranking is not that significant, since many of the best eventers are not competing until tomorrow.
